VirusNet Installation Instructions ------------------------------------- Thank you for looking at VirusNet, an automatic anti-virus and disaster recovery system from Safetynet, Inc. VirusNet has passed the certification tests of independent agencies such as the National Computer Security Association and provides effective protection against viruses. A. Installing VirusNet from Windows 1. Start Microsoft Windows. 2. Run SETUP.EXE from the directory where VirusNet files are stored. 3. You will have the option of creating a Program Manager or desktop group to launch the VirusNet programs. If you are not using Program Manager or Windows95, add VNWIN.EXE to your menu shell. B. Installing VirusNet from DOS The DOS eval is installed by copying the VirusNet files to a directory. -------------------- B. Starting VirusNet -------------------- VirusNet can be run from the DOS command-line or through its DOS and Windows interfaces. From the DOS command-line: 1. Run VN.EXE to receive a list of command-line options. - To scan your C: drive, type VN C: From Windows: 1. Select the "VirusNet" icon or run VNWIN.EXE directly. - Extensive context-sensitive help is available by pressing F1. 2. Click on the "Begin Scan" button from the Express Scan window. From DOS: 1. Run the VNDOS.EXE program. - Context-sensitive help is available by pressing F1. 2. Click on the "Begin Scan" button from the Express Scan window. From DOS Command-line: 1. Run the VN.EXE program without any parameters for various options. Examples: - To scan drive C:, run VN C: - To scan all hard drive partitions, run VN /HARD --------------------- C. VirusNet Operation --------------------- The DOS and Windows versions of VirusNet operate in a similar way. Feel free to explore the various menu choices and command buttons with your mouse or keyboard. If you need more information, press the F1 key to receive help on that item. Detailed help is provided to assist you. ------------------------- D. VirusNet v2.23 Changes ------------------------- Disinfection of boot sector viruses has been improved, as can be seen from the list below of viruses that were detected previously, but can only now be disinfected. Version 2.23 - minor improvements and changes: VirusNet now detects the PKZIP 3.00B Trojan. This Trojan is, however, not a "real" threat, but due to some unfounded hysteria, numerous warnings about it are in circulation, far outnumbering actual copies of the actual Trojan. Version 2.23 - new viruses: The following 51 viruses are now identified, but can not be removed as they overwrite or corrupt infected files. Some of them were detected by earlier versions of VirusNet, but not identified accurately. We are continuing with the massive virus renaming that was started in version 2.21. Many older viruses have now been renamed to correspond with the new scheme, including the VCL, PS-MPC and IVP-generated viruses. Names like VCL.Genocide.839 have been changed to VCL.839. Version 2.22 - the following problems were found and corrected: The Skid_Row viruses were not disinfected correctly in 2.21 and earlier versions, occasionally resulting in the corruption of the host programs. Version 2.22 - the following false alarms were fixed: CIJ.OBJ: MtE STEPRATE.EXE: Possibly a new variant of VCL Version 2.22 - minor improvements and changes: Disinfection of .EXE files infected with any of the over 100 known 1808 byte variants of Jerusalem has been improved. VirusNet can now determine if the virus has damaged files during infection, and if disinfection is possible, files will be restored to their original size, not leaving 1-15 bytes of garbage at the end. We improved the detection of the viruses generated by the MtE supplement of the VIRSIM package. However, we do not recommend the use of this package, and consider it worthless for the purpose of evaluating anti-virus products. Version 2.22 - new viruses: The following 35 viruses are now identified, but can not be removed as they overwrite or corrupt infected files. Crazyboot VirusNet v2.21 Changes ---------------------- Version 2.21 - major changes: Many virus names have been changed, in order to make the naming scheme more logical. Most new viruses now receive names of the form "family.xxxx", where xxxx is the infective length of the virus, and most old virus names have been changed accordingly. Version 2.21 - the following problems were found and corrected: The Antibase virus was only detected in COM files, not EXE. The Ginger.2774 virus was only detected in boot sectors, but not identified properly. The PH33R virus was not detected in Windows applications, just DOS files. Version 2.21 - the following false alarms were fixed: EMPRL03.COM: MtE NC.EXE: Possibly a new variant of Civil_Defense NGBOOT.EXE: Possibly a new variant of AntiCAD POSCRN.QPP: MtE ROMSHELL.COM:Possibly a new variant of PS-MPC TSRCHK.COM: Possibly a new variant of Taz VEIJO.EXE: Possibly a new variant of Urfydus Version 2.21 - minor improvements and changes: Previously, if a small file was created which contained nothing but a short byte sequence, which happened to match one of the search strings VirusNet used, it would report "possibly a new variant of ...". This has been changed so that if the file is too short to contain a virus, nothing is reported. VirusNet now recognizes four new packers/wrappers (Hybrid, JD3, Teus and Ucexe), which used to trigger the heuristic scanner, but are now reported properly. VirusNet now detects programs that have been Trojanized by the Exebug virus. Invalid files (for example .EXE files with the entry point outside the loadable part) do not count as "suspicious" files any more. Version 2.21 - new viruses: The following 43 viruses are now identified, but can not be removed as they overwrite or corrupt infected files.
